Leaves | green, in groups of two, 1.5-3 inches long, rigid and twisted. |
Dimensions | Size is 15-20 feet tall by over 20 in spread. I have seen plants 8-10 feet tall by equal or greater spread. At a condo project I work at there is a large spreading plant that is 4-5 feet tall by 15 feet spread. Size is variable from plant to plant and seed source to seed source. |
Maintenance | The best way to keep this conifer to size is annual pruning. This is accomplished by pruning back the new growth called candles. Also can be pruned back one or two nodes each year. |
Propagation | This plant is extremely variable in size because most are grown from seed. |
Native Site | Native to mountains of central and southern Europe. |
Cultivar Origin | introduced in 1779 |
Misc Facts | There are dwarf cultivars such as "Gnom" and variety pumilio that are more compact and smaller than the species. |
Author's Notes | I have seen thes over 6-8 feet tall and spreading over 12 feet. |
