Family: Commelinaceae

Scientific Name: Rhoeo spathacea vittata

Common Name: Variegated Moses-in-the-Boat, Variegated Boat Lily

DescriptionA variegated form of the more common Moses-in-the-Boat. Needs just the right spot or it will revert back to all green.
Plant TypeAll Plants, Indoor Foliage
SunlightThe correct light will help maintain the coloration in the leaves. Best in bright light.
MoistureEvenly moist to approach dryness. Plant is somewhat succulent.
Growing MediaDon't over fertilize. This is one cause of losing the variegation in the leaves.
FlowersThe flowers are tiny and white found in a boat (cradle)shaped purple bracts.
LeavesStriped with pale yellow bands, running lengthwise up the leaf. Underside of the leaf will be red-purple in the proper light.
DimensionsThis plant is slower growing than the species.
MaintenanceSooner or later these plants will need to be given a hair cut. I will cut them back to around an inch of the base and they will readily regrow.
PropagationCutting are very easy to root. Ones taken further down the stem, near the base of the plant seem to root over night. Cuttings taken in the mid to upper portion of the stem will root in around a week or less.
Misc FactsI have also seen this plant listed as Rhoeo spathacea "Variegata".
