Maintenance
Old-fashioned climbing roses (most ramblers) will flower only once a year. They should be pruned right after flowering. I prefer to prune in the spring since the rose will die from the tips back in the winter. If you prune in the fall the die back will be deeper into the rose plant. New roses from 1-3 years need to only be lightly pruned. Cut out any growth that occurs below the graft union. This growth is from the root stock and will quickly take over the bush and won't have the same flowers as the target plant.
