The process of subjecting seeds to extended
periods of cold moist conditions. This can be accomplished by placing
the seeds in a sterile container filled with moist sand, vermiculite,
sphagnum moss, etc. in a refrigerator set at 35-42 degrees F, for
30-90 days. This process mimics mother nature. In the fall when the
seeds are ripe and fall to the ground it is not advantages for them
to germinate. Since they might be killed by the cold temperatures.
Mother nature has provided the seeds with a dormancy mechanism to
prevent this. The dormancy is broken by the cold moist conditions
of the winter. |
