The process of altering the impervious
seed coat so water can soak into the seed. This can be accomplished
by three different methods. With mechanical scarification the seed
coat is scratched by using sand paper, nicking with a file or tumbling
in a container with sand. With acid scarification, the seeds are soaked
in acids such as sulfuric acid. Soaking in water or even boiling in
water is another method. When I sow Sensitive
Plant seeds I boil water and let them soak in it for an hour before
planting. My germination rate goes up 8-10 times. |
