rhizome
A rhich and fleshy or slender horizontal underground running stem. From this stem the roots and leaf stalks will be produced form the nodes. The adventitious roots develope usually on the lower surface of the rhizome. Examples of plants that have this structure are Iris, Sansevieria, Blood Root, etc.
The rhizome of the Blood root (Sanguinaria canadensis) bleeds a dark red sap if cut or broken.
