| The inactive, deadwood at the center of a tree or a branch, no longer conducts water but does provide support. It is made of secondary xylem that is dark color and inactive. The color of naturally stained heartwood can be a disirable characteristic. Heartwoods of many tree's are much more resistant to rotting, insects and diseases. |
