In general most people consider a bulb
to be a root. It is an underground storage organ consisting of a compact
stem surrounded by modified fleshy storage leaves. The outer thin
flaky layer are scalelike leaves that help provide protection for
the bulb. The previous years bulb will shrivel up as it's stored food
reserves are used to produce the foliage and flowers for this seasons
growth. A new bulb will be formed above the new bulb following flowering.
Adventitous roots form from the base of the bulb. Common bulbs are
tuilips, onions, lilies, hyacinths, etc. |
