adventitous roots

Many plants produce roots off of their stems to help them cling or climb. Corn will produce a group of roots off the base of the stem to provide a bigger base of support for the plant. Mangrove tree's produce prop roots off of their stems to help support the plant, growing in the very swampy conditions.
